Who it's for / Director Portfolio View
The signal layer between the site and the system.
Director Portfolio View is the live cross-site pane designed for the public-system Director tier. Twenty to thirty schools in one heat-map. Pattern detection. Threshold alerts. One-click drill-down into site context. Built so the Director sees the portfolio the way the Principal sees the site.
One pane. Twenty-five schools. Drill to site context in a single click.

Promise 1 of 3
The first signal layer the role has had.
Twenty-five schools, one pane, drill to site context in a click. Built for the Director job, not borrowed from the Principal one.
Promise 2 of 3
Critical events reach you in minutes.
Threshold-based routing across the portfolio. The phone call stops being the first you hear of a serious event.
Promise 3 of 3
Pattern surfaces while you can still coach.
Three sites slipping on the same obligation, visible early. Coaching arrives instead of the incident report.
Why a change is on the table
Principal tools do not scale to twenty-five schools.
The Director tier has been handed software designed for one school and asked to oversee twenty-five. The shape is wrong. The signal arrives late. The Director becomes the system's bottleneck.
Burden 1 of 3
Wrong shape.
A site dashboard is not a portfolio surface. Detail crowds out pattern. The Director is reading more and seeing less.
Burden 2 of 3
Wrong direction.
BI dashboards report downstream, not upstream. By the time the tile turns red the work has already happened and the moment to coach has gone.
Burden 3 of 3
Wrong cadence.
Spreadsheet portfolio views age out in weeks. Hand-maintained tracking collapses the moment a Principal transitions, and there is no Director who has not lived through that.
The role
Why a dedicated portfolio surface.
The Director tier is not a user variant of the Principal experience. It is a different job. Portfolio View is built for that job from first principles.
- 01
Principal tools do not scale to twenty-five schools.
A site dashboard is the wrong shape for portfolio oversight. The Director needs pattern, not detail.
- 02
BI dashboards report downstream, not upstream.
By the time a BI tile turns red, the work has already happened. The Director needs live, not historical.
- 03
Spreadsheet portfolio views age out in weeks.
Hand-maintained tracking works until a Principal transitions. Then the signal layer collapses.
- 04
Phone escalation is not a system.
Critical events should reach the Director in minutes, not at the next weekly catch-up.
Director Portfolio View on EthosGov
What the Portfolio View actually delivers.
Four capabilities that together make up the signal layer the role has never had. All composed from live site data, not from a re-reporting ask on Principals.
Live portfolio heat-map.
Every school, every pillar, one pane. Green, amber, red, drill down. Refreshed at the cadence the work happens.
Context
Why this surface is separate from Education Directors.
The Education Directors page speaks to the person. The Director Portfolio View page describes the tool. Both matter. Both route to the same walkthrough. Together they make the Director offer legible to procurement, to Department sponsors and to the Director themselves.
Portfolio View is also the anchor for Go2Gov procurement conversations. When a Departmental sponsor asks what EthosGov gives the Director tier, this is the surface we point them to.
Voice
The sector's read on the Director tier.
Three published findings that frame the procurement case for Portfolio View.
The Education Director tier is the single most under-tooled role in the Australian public school system relative to its accountability footprint.
Portfolio oversight in public schools is still carried by relationships, not by data. This is a systemic risk, not a leadership preference.
Directors who have access to live cross-site signal report earlier coaching interventions, fewer late-stage incidents and better retention of Principals.
Life inside the work
A week on Portfolio View.
A typical fortnight of pattern-led oversight. The Director is not replacing relationship. They are building it on top of signal.
- Monday
Heat-map read.
Ten minutes. Two amber patterns. Three green improvements. You enter the week with the portfolio in focus.
- Tuesday
Pattern alert.
Three metro primaries slipping on the same obligation. You scope a leadership forum conversation.
- Wednesday
Site visit.
Your briefing has composed itself. Three priority items. One outstanding action. You walk in ready to coach.
- Thursday
Incident triage.
Two weekend events have been captured by the sites. Evidence attached. You triage in minutes, not in an inbox chain.
- Friday
Executive update.
Your Executive Director asks for the portfolio story. You share a link, not a document.
- Next Monday
Cross-site scan.
Fortnightly pattern scan. One emerging risk type flagged. You brief the Department before it becomes a report.
- Ongoing
Principal relationship.
Standing calls stay. The relationship stays. The tool takes the re-reporting off both of you.

Answers
Frequently asked questions
Does Portfolio View require every school in my portfolio to be live on EthosGov?
No. The view begins with four or five pilot sites. Pattern detection is partial at first and strengthens as the portfolio comes online. Full coverage typically lands inside a school year.
What is the difference between Portfolio View and a BI dashboard?
BI reports on downstream data. Portfolio View is where the governance signal is created and held in real time. It is the source, not the reflection.
How is this procured under Go2Gov?
EthosGov is configured for the Go2Gov pathway with ISO 27001 alignment, Australian hosting, WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility and a full procurement brief available on request.
Book the portfolio pilot call.
Thirty minutes. We bring a demo portfolio configured with five SA public schools and walk the heat-map, the alert routing, the site drill-down and the Department roll-up path.
